How Do Self Storage Rentals Work?

Self-storage is a clean, secure and convenient way to store items that you don’t have the space for. There are many different reasons why people may need to use self-storage. Some common reasons to rent a self storage unit are seasonal storage, home remodeling, moving, excess business inventory or military deployment.

Know what to expect during the rental process with the following tips.

Choosing A Self Storage Facility Near You

Every storage facility has different features. Renting from a storage facility that has security measures in place, such as, security cameras, individual gate code access, good lighting and security patrols, should be a top priority. Other things you should consider are access hours, price, availability, reviews and location.  Find a self storage facility near you in St. Albert or Edmonton, AB.

What You Need To Rent A Storage Unit

It’s quite simple to rent a storage space. All you will need is a form of picture ID, be 18 years of age or older and some form of payment to pay your first month’s rent.

Choosing A Storage Unit Size And Type

Choosing the right size and type of storage unit is very important. Take an inventory of the belongings you plan on storing or stack your belongings and measure the dimensions to get a good idea of how large a storage locker you will need.

If you choose a storage unit that is too large for your needs, you’ll be wasting money. However, if you rent a unit that is too small, you will have to move everything over into a larger unit.

At Riel Park RV & Mini Storage, we are happy to help you determine the size of storage unit you will need, you can also use our unit size guide.  We also offer no hassle transfers. If you rent a storage unit that is too small or too large you can transfer into a different size of storage unit at any time.

1) Climate-controlled storage units

Climate-controlled storage units are usually inside of a building. These units are usually more expensive, but the extra cost is worth it when you have more sensitive items that you need to store.

Some items that are recommended to be placed in a climate-controlled storage unit are antiques, artwork, electronics and instruments.

2) Drive-up access storage units

Drive-up storage units are much like a shed or garage. These units are not heated, are cheaper and have the convenience of being able to drive up right to the door.

Signing The Rental Agreement

When moving into a storage unit, you can move in online, over the phone or in person.

When renting online, you have the convenience of moving in any day, any time, from the comfort of your own home. You will be sent an e-lease to sign and will need to make your first month’s rent payment with a credit card.

If you rent in person, you will need to attend the rental office during office hours. Renting in person can be a better option if you have questions or need to have a look at a few storage units to make sure you choose the right size.

The rental agreement will include all the terms of your lease and what is expected of you. Make sure to read over the rental agreement and ask any questions before you sign. Most storage facilities offer month-to-month rentals and have move in specials.

Rental insurance is usually required as the storage facility is not responsible for the contents of your unit, should something happen. You can pay for the third-party insurance offered by the storage facility or get your unit insured under your homeowners or renters’ insurance.

Payment Options

Automatic payments can be set up on a credit card or as a pre-authorized debit from your bank account. This form of payment is optimal as you will never have to worry about missing a rental payment. Payments can also be paid by cash, e-transfer, debit or credit card and even online.

Moving In

Once you have made payment and signed the rental agreement, you will receive an individual access code to get through the gate. You are then free to start moving your belongings into your storage unit. Make sure to bring a lock to secure your unit.

What You Can’t Store/Do In A Storage Unit

Storage units are meant for storing household items. Some examples of what you are not allowed to store are flammable or hazardous materials, food and living things such as plants and animals.

Most storage facilities won’t let you use your unit to work on your vehicle due to the use of hazardous materials and lack of electricity.

Living in your storage unit is also not allowed and is illegal. Doing this would cause you to be immediately evicted.

Moving Out Of Your Storage Unit

As most rental agreements are month-to-month, you can move out at any time with 30 day’s notice. On the day you move out, remove everything from your unit, including your lock. Sweep out your locker and notify the office when you are done. Your account will be closed out of the system and then you are all done and moved out.
