Self Storage Tips & Tricks

Storage Tip and Tricks

Whether you are in the middle of moving, downsizing your home or simply decluttering around the house, this is the perfect time to rent a self storage unit. Self-storage offers a cost-effective way to keep your belongings safe, secure and accessible.

Check out our tips and tricks below to make your moving day easier:

GET THE RIGHT SIZE STORAGE UNIT

One of the most important things to keep in mind when renting a storage unit is choosing the right size of storage unit that meets your needs. With the wide range of storage unit sizes available, Riel Park RV & Self Storage can accommodate your needs for both residential and commercial storage.  Our storage rental experts would be happy to help you choose the right size of storage unit for your needs.

UNHEATED STORAGE OR CLIMATE-CONTROLLED STORAGE

Another thing you will want to keep in mind is whether you need a climate-controlled storage unit or an unheated drive-up unit.

Drive-up storage units are very convenient as you can drive your vehicle right up to the door of the unit and load and unload easily.

Climate-controlled storage units are great for your more delicate items such as, antiques, electronics and family heirlooms. They are especially great if you are storing for a long period of time as no matter what the weather is like outside, your unit will be warm and dry.

STOCK UP ON PACKING SUPPLIES

Not only will you want to stock up on packing supplies, you will want to get the RIGHT supplies. New boxes that are made for moving or plastic totes are more durable and you can control the sizes to make stacking easier.

Pick up specialty packing supplies such as wardrobe boxes, glass and plate packing kits and mirror boxes. These will make packing easier and will keep your belongings more organized.

PURGE BEFORE PACKING

The number one thing everyone should do before packing is to go through everything and purge. If you come across items that you haven’t used in 2-3 years, get rid of them. Not only will this clean up your home, but it could also mean that you can get a smaller storage unit and save some money.

PREPARE YOUR ITEMS FOR STORAGE

To make sure that your belongings stay in the same condition that you left them while in self storage, make sure you put them into storage properly. Clean all fabric furniture by vacuuming and deodorizing first. Even the smallest amount of crumbs in a couch cushion can attract pests to your unit.

Appliances should all be cleaned out thoroughly and drained of any water, so they don’t end up leaking or soaking your other items.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF VERTICAL SPACE

Take advantage of all of the space in your storage unit by going vertical. Stack boxes and totes right to the top of the unit. Using shelving is also good for storing hard to stack items or putting boxes on for easier access.

PUT HEAVY BOXES AT THE BOTTOM & DON'T FORGET TO LABEL BOXES

Always put your heavier items and boxes on the bottom. You don’t want them crushing anything underneath them or toppling over and breaking something or possibly hurting you.

Label all boxes to make finding things easier. Put what room they belong to, but also, label what is in every box, so you won’t have to go through all of them to find what you need.

USE PALLETS IN YOUR STORAGE UNIT

Get some pallets and put them on the floor of your storage space. This will keep your items off the concrete floor and create more air flow in the unit to help prevent mold and moisture buildup.

TAKE APART FURNITURE

Any furniture that can be taken apart, such as bed frames and tables, should be taken apart for storage. Put all components from the piece of furniture in a zipper bag and tape it to the piece of furniture. This will free up a lot of space in the storage unit.

USE VACUUM SEALED BAGS

Vacuum seal bags are great for short-term storage solution. Put all your blankets, pillows, bedding, etc. into these bags. They will save you a ton of space and keep your items clean, dry and safe from pests.

WHAT NOT TO STORE IN A STORAGE UNIT

Not everything can be put into a storage unit. Things like food, other perishable items, illegal substances, explosives, dangerous chemicals, etc., are not allowed to be stored in a self storage unit. Make sure to make other arrangements for these items.
