Tips To Prevent Moving Injuries

Moving boxes, furniture and heavy objects can cause injuries if not done correctly.  Whether you are moving, relocating, downsizing  to a new home or renting a self storage unit, you should always practice safe lifting techniques to prevent injuries.

Moving is both mentally and physically exhausting and injuries can happen at any time.  As we get tired, we find ourselves in a rush and we don't always use proper lifting techniques.  It is very important to never lift more than you can handle or overestimate your strength.

1) WARM UP AND STRETCH

Before moving you should always warm up and stretch to prevent injuries.  When moving we use our back, legs, shoulders and arms so you should concentrate stretching those muscles.   It is important to warm up prior to stretching.

To warm up do a light intensity exercise for at least 5 minutes.   This could be a short walk or jogging on the spot. Stretching a cold muscle can increase your risk of pulling a muscle.  Never bounce or force a stretch as this could also lead to injury.  Hold each stretch for 15-30 seconds to ensure the muscle fibers are being stretched adequately.

2)  PLAN THE LIFT

You should always plan your lift and ensure your path is clear with no obstacles in the way to avoid moving injuries.  Think about where things are going before you load or unload.

Can you drag the item instead of lifting it?  Can you lift the item safely by yourself or do you need help? Always be aware of the weight of the item you are going to lift.   Avoid lifting boxes over your head.

3)  LOOK AHEAD & LIFT CLOSE TO YOUR BODY

Your shoulders should be back and your face straight ahead with your chest forward.  Stand and face the moving box with your feet shoulder-length apart. If your feet are too close together or too far apart, you will only increase the chances of a back injury.  You will also be stronger if the object is held close to your body rather than at the end of your reach.

4)  BEND YOUR KNEES

Once you’re in the right position, bend your knees and squat down to grab the object you will be lifting.  Use your legs and hips, not your back to lift the object off the ground.  Keep your back straight, never bend or arch your back as this will lead to injuries.

5)  AVOID TWISTING

When carrying an object, do not bend or twist at the waist.  If you need to turn, move your feet instead of twisting and lifting at the same time.

6)  NEVER LIFT ABOVE YOUR SHOULDERS

Be sure to look straight ahead with your chest out and your shoulders back.  Always keep items below shoulder level and never lift heavy items over your head.

7)  WALK SLOWLY

When carrying the object, use slow and smooth movements.  Quick, jerky, or twisted movements can pull your muscles.   Make sure your footing is secure and take small steps.

8)  ASK FOR HELP

Don't try to  lift more than you can handle.  If you are unsure how heavy a box or item is, it is always safer to ask for help.  Don't try and push yourself as this will just lead to an injury.  If you are putting your belongings into a self storage unit, many storage facilities have dollies and carts available, free of charge.

You might want to consider hiring a professional moving company.  They are move experienced and efficient at handling bulky and heavy furniture.
