Things That Need Extra Protection During Winter

Wrapped Furniture In Storage

Occasionally we forget that even though outdoor storage protects our property from wind, snow, or rain, it doesn't prevent it from freezing.  When packing your stuff for storage please be aware of the damage freezing temperatures can cause.

For example, do not pack items like your snow globes for outside storage. If the liquid freezes your globe will crack and leak all over everything packed with it, as it starts to thaw.

APPLIANCES

Any appliances that use water such as dishwashers, refrigerators or washing machines need to be completely drained and dry before moving them into a cold environment.

FRAGILE ITEMS

When packing any glass or plastic items that will be exposed to cold, use extra padding and sturdy boxes to avoid breakage.

ELECTRONICS

Remove batteries from all your electronic devices and store the batteries at room temperature.  If you are storing your electronics in outside storage, make sure to let it gradually reach room temperature, for at least 24 hours, before plugging in or turning on.  Storing your electronics where they may be exposed to freezing temperatures could cause interior condensation that when frozen can cause damage to the components.

LIQUIDS

Any cleaning supplies tend to separate when frozen so do not store them where they could freeze.

Water-based paints, like acrylics, cannot be stored in a freezing environment, they separate and cannot be rejuvenated.

MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS

Musical instruments, especially reed and string instruments, do not react well to changing temperatures and humidity fluctuations.  Store them in a climate-controlled environment together with your art collection.

FURNITURE

To protect your wood furniture, wax them one to two weeks before moving them into cold storage.  Also, protect them with an insulated moving blanket and/or industrial strength plastic.

SEASONAL TOOLS

A pressure washer needs to be drained and flushed with antifreeze as part of the process for winter storage.  Garden hoses must be completely drained with all knots removed before coiling and storing.

When you are packing your stuff for outside storage be very aware of how each item will react to freezing temperatures.  When you are looking for St Albert Self Storage, Riel Park RV & Mini Storage has interior climate-controlled storage units as well as outside drive-up storage units.

BARBEQUE

Remove the battery from the electronic ignition, and clean the grate, heat plates, warming rack, and burners.  Protect with a cover.  If using self storage and storing your BBQ, the propane tank cannot be stored inside a storage unit.  Make sure the grate is completely clean, and run thru your dishwasher to ensure it's clean as a dirty barbeque can attract rodents into your storage unit.

VEHICLE STORAGE

If you are storing your vehicle for the winter, you must remove the battery.  Store the battery where the temperature will not be so low that the battery will freeze.  If a battery freezes it could become useless.

RV STORAGE

When storing an RV during the winter you must drain the water system, blow out the water lines or flush with antifreeze.  Remove the batteries and store them where the temperature will not be so low that the battery will freeze.
