The Importance Of Insuring Your Items In Self Storage

Self Storage Insurance

When it comes to protecting your items, self storage units do a great job. At our Elite Self Storage Facilities we provide individualized keypad access, security cameras, and great friendly staff. Our storage facility has security cameras, as well as, well-lit parking lots and grounds. Our self storage units are a secure storage option for your belongings, but there is always a slight chance that we could encounter natural disasters.

Your stored items should be covered by some form of insurance. Your first option might be to see if your homeowner's or renter's insurance policy extends to your items stored outside of your home or apartment.

We recommend acquiring tenant insurance for your storage unit, as it is similar to landlords requiring insurance as a condition of renting.

Here are some tips on the importance of insuring your items in self storage.

1. Why is Storage Insurance necessary?
2. Reasons to consider storage insurance.
3. Will my current homeowner's or renter's insurance policy work?
4. Should I purchase the insurance offered by the storage facility?
5. What is not covered?

Why is Storage Insurance necessary?

You may not be aware that your property stored at a self storage facility may not be covered by the facility for loss or damage. We recommend that you consider having adequate insurance coverage for your personal property. Homeowner's or renter's policies may only cover you for a limited time, up to 30 days.

Having storage insurance will provide peace of mind. Storage insurance can help protect, repair, or replace your items that may get damaged or destroyed while being in a rented storage unit. A self storage insurance policy is specific to the perils that you might encounter in a self storage facility. Coverage often includes fire or smoke damage, lightning, theft, vandalism, and water damage.

Reasons to consider storage insurance

Even though storage facilities are safe and have good security, there are reasons why you should consider coverage. Some of your belongings may be valuable or have sentimental value and weather can be an issue. Burglaries may not be common, but can still happen. Consider storing your belongings in a climate-controlled storage facility for added protection from the elements.

Will my current homeowner's or renter's insurance policy work?

If you already carry a homeowner's or renter's insurance policy, we recommend you reach out to your provider and see what options your policy already has. Coverage for self storage units is considered "off-premises" coverage.

Carefully review the terms of your current policy to ensure that you are fully covered, or that additional coverage can be added. Your homeowner's or renter's policy may have a limit and if you make a claim, it may increase your home insurance premiums.

Homeowner's insurance typically includes personal property coverage such as clothing, appliances, electronics, and furniture. These items have specific coverage amounts, so ensuring you have enough coverage for on-site and off-site is imperative.

Should I purchase the insurance provided by the storage facility?

Storage companies may have preferred insurance vendors they can connect you with.  Storage Shield is a low-cost insurance program allowing you to choose how long you need the coverage for. Insurance coverage includes fire, water, burglary, wind, and more.  Get peace of mind knowing your items are covered for a low monthly premium of $16.00 per month for $10,000 worth of coverage.

At Elite Self Storage South Edmonton and Elite Self Storage Riel Park insurance is mandatory.  If your homeowner policy provides coverage, simply provide us with a copy of your certificate of insurance within 30 days and we will waive the insurance fee.

What is not covered?

Climate Controlled self storage units are ideal for storing some of your most valued items, but certain things are not covered when renting a storage unit. Policies, more often than not, exclude art, jewelry, furs, collectibles, and cash. With jewelry, cash, or collectibles, we recommend that you consider using a bank safety security box.

Damage resulting from insects, rodents, or other vermin are also not covered. You may want to ask the storage facility about the handling of rodent and insect populations. Many storage facilities have ongoing control for these issues.  At all of our Elite Self Storage Facilities we hire an external pest control service.

With any insurance policy, it is good to read the fine print, making sure that you are covered. You might need to purchase an additional floater insurance policy to cover an item if it were to be lost or stolen.

Self storage insurance is a good idea if you want some additional protection for your stored belongings.  It is an inexpensive method to ensure your stored belongings are safe.
