It’s important to protect your decorations when they’re packed away in storage as they will spend much of the year there. It is important to pack them properly and keep them organized as you will being pulling them in and out every year.

Check out the tips below to set yourself up right for years to come.

Purge

Purging is always the first step. Any decorations that never made it out this year should be thrown away. If they weren’t important enough this year, they won’t be next year either.

As you are gathering up all of your decorations, inspect them for damage. Anything broken or damaged should be thrown out. There are always great deals on Halloween supplies once it’s over. You can take this opportunity to fill up on stuff for next year!

Candles made from real wax have a good chance of melting while in storage and possibly damaging other decorations. Save yourself the grief and dispose of them now.

Costume makeup and glow sticks should not be stored. They have a short shelf life and won’t be any good to use next year.

Clean, Clean, Clean

Everything should always be cleaned before being put into storage. Wipe down all of your decorations before putting them away. Not only will it be more difficult to clean everything next year, you also run the risk of attracting pests and items getting damaged.

Take special care of cleaning lawn decorations. You don’t want to store spiders and other bugs with your decorations.

Make sure to remove batteries from any decorations before storing. Batteries can leak and corrode while in storage and make a big mess.

Use Plastic Storage Bins

Most decorations get stored away in the most inaccessible parts of the house. Consider getting color coded plastic storage bins to store all of your decorations.

You can pick up orange for Halloween, red for Christmas, etc. These will make them easily identifiable and a breeze to locate when you need them. They are also extra security from pests and water damage.

Protect Your Fragile Items

Any of your fragile decorations should be wrapped in bubble wrap or packing paper to protect them while in storage. Fill any empty spaces in boxes with extra paper to prevent them from moving around and possibly breaking.

For decorations that have dangling parts, wrap them with kitchen wrap to protect the moving parts. Storing candles by sliding a sock over keeps them clean and gives them some added protection.
