Protecting your decorations when packed away in storage is essential, as they will spend much of the year there. Packing them properly and keeping them organized is crucial, as you will most likely pull them in and out every year.
Check out the tips below to set yourself up for years to come.
The first step is always to purge. Any decorations that didn't make it out this year should be tossed. If they weren't important this year, they probably won't be next year either.
As you gather up all of your decorations, inspect them for damage. Anything broken or damaged decorations should be thrown out. Once Halloween is over, there are always great deals on Halloween supplies. Take this opportunity to fill up on stuff for next year!
Candles made from real wax are likely to melt while in storage and possibly damage other decorations. Save yourself the grief and dispose of them now.
Costume makeup and glow sticks should not be stored. They have a short shelf life and will not be useful next year.
Everything should always be cleaned before being put into storage. Wipe down all of your decorations before putting them away. Not only will it be more difficult to clean everything next year, but you also run the risk of attracting pests and damaging items.
Take special care of cleaning lawn decorations. You don’t want to store spiders and other bugs with your decorations.
Make sure to remove batteries from any decorations before storing them. Batteries can leak and corrode while in storage, making a big mess.
Most decorations get stored away in the most inaccessible parts of the house. Consider getting color-coded plastic storage bins to store all of your decorations.
You can pick up orange for Halloween, red for Christmas, etc. These will make them easily identifiable and easy to locate when needed. They also provide extra security from pests and water damage.
Your fragile decorations should be wrapped in bubble wrap or packing paper to protect them while in storage. Fill empty spaces in boxes with extra paper to prevent them from moving around and possibly breaking.
For decorations with dangling parts, wrap them with kitchen wrap to protect the moving parts. Storing candles by sliding a sock over them keeps them clean and gives them some added protection. Lastly, don’t forget to wipe down your decorations before storing them; this ensures cleanliness and prevents germs. Do not forget to dry them before storing them.
Even using the best packing tips, you may still find that you don’t have enough space around your home. Consider renting a self-storage unit to store all of your seasonal decorations. If you need help figuring out which storage unit size you need, check out our unit size guide.
