Packing Supplies To Help You Move

Packing is one of the most important things on your list when moving.  It takes time, planning and yes, even some skill.

Organizational skills come into play when packing your household items.  Pack room by room and pack similar items together.  You will find that when it’s time to unpack, things will go faster and smoother.  Place the heaviest items at the bottom of the box and refrain from overpacking your boxes.

When packing up your household, it allows you to declutter and purge those unwanted items. If you have time, place your unwanted items online for sale, this will help put a few extra dollars in your pocket.  You can also donate to a local charity or thrift store.

Here are a few packing and moving supplies that will help your moving day go smoothly:

Moving Boxes

It is often easy to find boxes for free that have already been used in a move.  Friends and family always seem to have extra boxes lying around in their basements and garages.  One thing to be careful of when using used boxes is how strong and sturdy they are.

If you can afford to buy new boxes, Elite Self Storage carries a variety of new boxes ranging from 1.5 cubic feet (small boxes) to large wardrobe boxes at affordable prices.  New boxes are sturdy and come flat for easy transport.  Having new boxes will help carry your belongings safely, as you do not want to deal with ripped or damaged boxes on your moving day!

Bubble Wrap

Using bubble wrap helps to keep your fragile items safe and protected during your move.  They provide a layer of air between your items, cushioning them for the best protection.

As well as the protection of your items, most of us can admit that popping the bubble wrap when done using it, is a guilty pleasure.  You’ll have a blast and a great stress release popping all those bubbles when you unpack your items.  Bubble wrap can be purchased in a variety of sizes, lengths and widths.

Stretch wrap

This moving essential is often overlooked but is a must have. Stretch wrap uses are endless and make your moving experiences easier and less work.  You might wonder what stretch wrap is used for?.

Here are a few suggestions:

  • Wrap your drawers - No need to empty your drawers when moving.  Place the stretch wrap over your drawers, it will keep them tight and when it’s time to unpack, just remove the wrap.

  • Wrap Cabinet doors closed - It will keep them from swinging open.

  • Bundle long items together.

  • Use on your rugs by rolling them tight to move.

  • For a no spill solution, use stretch wrap on your shampoo bottles and food items by opening the lid and stretching some wrap over the opening and replacing the lid.

  • Wrap pillows from your sofa and keep them all together.

Stretch wrap is also ideal for placing on the corners of furniture to keep them from being damaged. It is an affordable packing material that will help save money in the long run.

Packing Tape

Tape all your boxes well during your move.  It is important to use a couple pieces of tape to close the bottom and top of your boxes.  A well used technique by moving companies is to make a couple wraps all around the box’s top and bottom edges for additional security.

Make sure to use packing tape, and not duct tape to seal your boxes.  While duct tape is strong, it does not adhere particularly well to cardboard and leaves a residue on the boxes.

Packing tape is ideal for packing because it is resilient, durable and has good adhesion strength.  Masking tape is a good option for labelling any item that is breakable by marking a large “X” on the box.  It is easy to see and brings attention that the items are fragile.  Packing tape is also a very affordable option and can be purchased individually or in sets with a tape gun.

Mattress Bags

Furniture is an expensive purchase we all make, so be sure not to forget to include these in your moving materials.  Mattress bags will reduce the risk of your mattress being damaged during your move or while in storage.  These bags are very inexpensive and are available in a wide range of sizes.

On your moving day, place your mattress into the bag so it is ready to go and be loaded on to the moving truck.  Dust and weather will be no match when your mattress is protected with a mattress bag.

Packing Paper

Packing paper is an economical way to protect your items when moving.  Ensure that your paper is acid free and free from ink to protect your glassware, valuables and collectables.  Packing paper is also handy for dinnerware, pots and pans, knives and other household items that require protecting.

Packing Peanuts

Biodegradable packing peanuts are great at helping keep your belongings safe during a move.  They are shock absorbent and provide a cushion for fragile items. As they are biodegradable, they are made from recycled materials.

Styrofoam peanuts are not recommended as they cause challenges when it comes to disposal and do not break down.  Biodegradable packing peanuts are an affordable, non toxic and sustainable packing alternative.

Plastic Bags

Although plastic bags are not the best for the environment and are not always easy to recycle, plastic bags are a functional and convenient packing option. Plastic bags are durable, weatherproof, less vulnerable to tearing and are resistant to many chemicals.  They also provide a layer of security when bunched together.

Scissors and Box Cutters

Moving can be stressful and without the basic essentials, it can be even more difficult. Make sure to have a good pair of scissors and a box cutter for easy access to your boxes and to remove shrink wrap.

Dolly

Carrying your boxes one by one is a daunting task and those heavy boxes could do some damage.  Use a dolly to prevent unwanted drops and to assist with your heavier items.

Moving Blankets

Moving blankets help keep your furniture from getting dirty and dusty.  They can also provide a layer of protection from scratches and damage that may occur during your move.  They are an economical option for packing your larger items and increase the chances that your items will arrive at your home safe and sound!
