As exciting as a new move can be, it can also be very stressful. With so many things to take care of and complete before moving day, it can become very stressful.
There are many ways to make your moving day easier. From ways to pack and unpack faster, to things to get done and set up before hand, follow these moving tips to make your moving day easy.
As soon as you have your moving date all set up, call all of your utility providers to set up the day they need to be transferred over to your new home. You don’t want to show up at your new home and have no power or water.
It’s very common to forget to change your address with at least one company. To prevent missing anything important, go directly to the post office and fill out the “change of address” form. Then, when any mail gets redirected to your new home, you can call them directly and get your address changed.
If you plan on using a professional moving company, start calling around to book a mover as soon as you know your moving date. Depending on the time of year, movers can book up fast, so remove the stress of trying to find one last minute by booking one immediately.
When moving, it's important to use sturdy moving boxes, bubble wrap, packing paper, packing tape and other moving supplies to protect your belongings.
There’s lots of little things you can do to make your move more efficient. One thing is to use the drawers in your dressers as boxes. No need to pull everything out and pack them in another box.
Simply take out your dresser drawers, wrap them with packing stretch wrap and you’re done! After the move, simply cut off the plastic wrap and put the drawers back in the dresser.
Packing up all of the clothes in your closet can be a lot of work. Taking them off the hanger, folding them up, boxing them up and then having to rehang them when you arrive at your new home. Save yourself a ton of time by packing them up while still on the hangers.
Your best option, is to use wardrobe boxes. They are made specifically for this and have handles for easier carrying. When you move into your new home, all you have to do is transfer them from the box to the closet and your unpacking is done.
Labeling all of your boxes is one of the most important things you can do to make your move easier. By labeling your boxes, you will easily be able to find anything you may need immediately, rather than having to tear open a bunch of boxes.
Remember to always label the sides of the boxes, not the top. When they’re all piled on top of each other, having just the top labeled will provide you with no help.
Many people are not very tech savvy. To save yourself a lot of grief, take a picture of the back of your TV before you disconnect anything. When you are setting up in your new home, you can just reference the photo and have your TV, game system, Blu-ray player and sound bar set up and ready to go in no time.
While you are moving, there are some items that you will need access to while you are moving and right after. Items such as medications, phone chargers, important documents, toiletries and maybe even extra clothes, blankets and bedsheets. Pack yourself a box or bag with all of these items and keep them with you in your vehicle, not on the moving truck.
To make your move easier, always take apart furniture whenever possible. Items like bedframes, wall units and shelves and even your dining room table. Not only will it make it much easier to move these pieces, but they will also take up less room in the moving truck. Keep all of the screws, bolts, etc., in plastic zipper bags and attach them to the piece of furniture they belong to, so they don’t get misplaced.
With all that goes on when moving day comes, it can be easy to forget to have anything to eat or drink. Pack a cooler with snacks and beverages to get you and your helpers through until you make it to your new home.
When moving, even if you have enough time to move from one home to the other, without a gap in between, a storage unit can simplify your move. As you pack your items, you can move them into your storage unit. This gets everything out of your way and gives you a better idea of what is left to do.
