How to Store Winter Items in Self Storage

Winter Clothing and ski gear

Spring has arrived, the birds are chirping and the flowers are blooming.  Rather than designating a closet or your attic to store your winter gear, consider renting a self-storage unit, where you have added protection for your items with good airflow and circulation.

Renting a self storage unit can provide extra space so you can store your winter toys and household items.  Some of these seasonal items include:

1. Storing Snowboards and Skis
2. Storing Snowmobiles
3. Storing Holiday Decorations
4. Storing Winter Clothes
5. Storing Winter Tires

Storing Snowboards and Skis

When it comes to storing your winter sports equipment, it is important to store them in a dry location. A climate-controlled storage unit is ideal as it provides a clean and dry location away from cold weather. This will help to avoid any rust or warping of your expensive equipment, leaving them in excellent condition for the next season. We suggest that you also do a good cleaning, wax, cover and store your boards and skis in specialized bags.

Storing Snowmobiles

Snowmobiles are an expensive piece of equipment and you will want to ensure that you are storing them properly. Before storing, we recommend that you use mild soap and water to remove any dirt and/or salt.

Treat the fuel with a fuel stabilizer, change engine oil, and apply a lightweight oil to any exposed metal surfaces.  Disconnect the battery and finally, cover your snowmobile with a cover or cotton sheet for added protection.

Make sure you check with your storage facility to see if they permit the storage of motorized vehicles, the same goes for lawnmowers in the summer.

Storing Holiday Decorations

Storing your holiday decorations in a self storage unit will allow you to free up some space at home. We suggest using plastic totes and to pack like items together.  Make sure to label your storage totes or boxes so you can find your items faster.  It is also a good idea to make a quick inventory list of what is in each box or storage tote.

If you are renting a storage unit to store your seasonal items, keep an inventory list of the items in your storage unit so they are easy to find when you need them.

Some of your holiday decorations may be fragile, so using packing peanuts or bubble wrap will assist in keeping your items safe.  Stop by our rental office at Elite Self Storage for all your packing and moving supplies.

Storing Winter Clothes

Before you pack anything away, take a minute to run them through the washer and dryer. Packing clean items will save you time and keep your items lasting longer. Boots, heavier socks, gloves, mittens and heavy coats can be placed into plastic storage totes.

If you have items that you are not using, consider donating them to a women's shelter or thrift store, as they are always welcome and needed.

Take a few additional minutes to fold your seasonal clothing so they are well organized and maintain their shape. For long winter coats and ski pants, consider using a wardrobe box. Renting a storage unit is a great solution for storing your summer and winter clothing.

Storing Winter Tires

With the change of seasons, your winter tires are no longer required. Store your winter tires in a climate controlled storage unit.  Cover in plastic and remember to rotate them occasionally to keep them in good shape. Keep your tires out of direct sunlight, as the UV rays can cause damage to the rubber.
