Before you start, gather up everything you will need in the packing and moving process. Always pick up a little more than you think you will need. Having the essential supplies ready and on hand will make packing quick and enjoyable.

Moving boxes are one of the most obvious items you will need for your move. It’s easy to just grab whatever you can find and make it work. There are, however, a few things to keep in mind when getting boxes. Make sure to pick up a variety of sizes.
You will need bigger boxes for your lighter items and smaller ones for your heavier items. If you plan on picking up some used boxes, make sure they are clean and in good shape. You can also pick up some specialty boxes. There’s tv boxes, mirror boxes and even wardrobe boxes to help protect your items and make your move easier.
Bubble wrap and packing paper are a must have for protecting your more delicate and breakable items.
Bubble wrap comes in many different sizes and some even have serrated sections to tear off. Bubble wrap is great for your larger items, or for wrapping up mirrors and more delicate furniture. It is also ideal for padding the bottom and sides of more fragile boxes for added protection.
Packing paper is essentially newsprint, but without all the ink on it so your items, and your hands, will stay clean. It’s another great option for wrapping your breakables and is especially good for your smaller items. Use it to fill any gaps in your boxes to make sure things stay in place and don’t move around during the move.
Labeling your boxes with a permanent marker, as you pack, is essential. You can also pick-up different colours and assign a colour to each room to make your move and unpacking much easier and quicker. Make sure to have multiples on hand while you are packing so that if you misplace one, you don’t have to waste valuable time trying to find it.
When picking up packing tape, spend a little bit more and pick up some quality packing tape. Cheaper tape is typically very thin and does not stick very well. Use a tape gun to make taping up your boxes quick and easy. Always make sure to pick up more tape than you think you need and save some money by buying your tape in bulk.
Furniture covers are specifically designed to protect your furniture from scuffs, dirt and dust while moving and while in storage. You can get furniture covers for mattresses, couches, chairs, etc.
At the very least, make sure to always pick up a mattress bag. They can be very difficult to move and keep clean if not covered. Simply slide the cover over your mattress and tape it shut to prevent it from sliding off during the move.
You can use stretch wrap for all sorts of things while you are packing and moving. Wrapping up cutlery and make-up trays will secure everything in place. This also makes unpacking much easier and quicker.
It’s also perfect for wrapping around dressers and other pieces of furniture to secure the drawers/doors and prevent them from opening when moving. The great part is that stretch wrap sticks to itself, so no tape is needed and you don’t have to worry about residue ending up on your furniture.
A utility knife and/or scissors are great to have on hand while packing. You can use them to cut bubble wrap, tape, stretch wrap or anything else that comes up. They are also an essential tool for unpacking, to make it quick and easy. Again, make sure to have multiples on hand in case they get misplaced.
