Mattresses are a big investment, costing upwards of thousands of dollars. The time it takes to find the right one for you is also very valuable. If you properly maintain your mattress, it can easily last 10-15 years.
Since mattresses can be very expensive, it makes sense to store them safely and properly. However, if proper care isn’t taken, the time they spend in storage can damage them permanently.
If you are storing your mattress in a self-storage unit, here are some tips on how to prepare and store it properly so you can enjoy it for years to come.
Cleaning your mattress before it is put into storage is a must. Even though they may look clean, mattresses are known to collect dust mites, dead skin cells, and other allergens. These can accumulate quickly, so even if you clean your mattress regularly, make sure to always clean it before putting it into storage.
There are many different ways to clean your mattress. First, vacuum both sides thoroughly. Be sure to get into any seams and corners where debris can hide. Remember, your box spring is important, too, so whatever you do to the mattress, do to the box spring as well.
Consider using an upholstery cleaner designed for delicate surfaces on your mattress, but be careful. The materials and designs of mattresses vary greatly these days, so certain cleaners might damage them. The safest way is to sprinkle baking soda and let it sit for 12-24 hours. This will absorb any lingering odors in the mattress. Vacuum up all of the baking soda afterward.
To prevent mold or mildew from growing on the mattress while in storage, air it out for at least a few hours after cleaning it.
Now that your mattress is nice and clean, you want to keep it that way. Put your mattress in a plastic mattress bag before storing it, and tape secure the open end with tape. Mattress bags are made specifically to protect your mattress while moving or in storage. Investing in a good-quality mattress bag will help keep out dust, dirt, pests, and protect the fabric and internal structure of the mattress.
If you will be storing your mattress for a long period of time, make sure to open the mattress bag every few months to air it out. When you’re done airing it out, reseal it tightly again.
When storing your mattress, it must be stored laying flat. This is the way they were designed and by propping it up on its side, you risk it shifting and settling out of its proper position. Storing it upright for an extended period can also cause structural damage or uneven wear.
This doesn’t mean that it needs to be laid on the floor. However, if you do decide to lay it directly on the floor, even though it is in a mattress bag, make sure to put a tarp under it first. This will prevent moisture from the ground or floor from seeping into the mattress. The mattress can also be laid flat on top of other flat furniture or boxes to help save space.
Never store anything on top of the mattress. Mattresses are built to have people lay on them; however, this is not constant, and they are given time to rest and reshape.
Constant pressure on your mattress does not allow the material to rest. This can damage the mattress components and springs. Heavy items can leave permanent dents or warp the mattress structure. Placing objects on top of your mattress while in storage will significantly lessen its life.
Not only is it important to put your mattress into storage properly, it is also important to take it out properly. When you’re ready to take it out of storage, sprinkle baking soda on it and let it sit for a few hours. Vacuum the baking soda up thoroughly. This will help refresh and deodorize the mattress after months of storage. After this, air it out for a few hours before putting your sheets and bedding on it.
