Decluttering When Overwhelmed | Self Storage

Overwhelmed-Use-Self-Storage

You have made the decision that it is time to declutter your home. Starting the process of decluttering your home can be physically and mentally exhausting. Though, if you focus on the end result, decluttering can be a very positive experience.

Decluttering refreshes your home and creates space for organizing those items you need and wish to keep. Start with a small space, like a kitchen drawer, and then move on to larger spaces.

Here are some tips if you are feeling overwhelmed about the task of decluttering your home.

Have a Decluttering Plan

The first thing you should do is make a plan. Take a walk through your home and decide which area has the clutter that really impacts you in your daily living. Start with the most visible small area and find a home for each item you touch. Do not simply move items to another area without putting them in their new home.

Remember, moving clutter from one room to another is not decluttering. Set a schedule for a time to handle the actions in your plan. Start with short increments of time and build from there. Having a clear idea of what you are doing and when you will be doing it will help minimize the stress of decluttering your home.

Sorting System To Help Reduce Clutter

Keep things organized by setting up a sorting system. Label each separate box as trash, donate, keep, and undecided. When you have finished sorting for the day, put away whatever is in the “keep” box, remove the trash items and take your donation items to a donation centre.

Your ‘undecided’ box can also be considered your ‘storage’ box. Hopefully, your undecided box has the fewest items of all four boxes. Store these items out of the way and set a time to go back and review the contents. Reviewing the destination of these items will become much clearer to you when your decluttering is complete and you have had time to adjust to a clutter free home.

Ask Important Questions

To help you decide on what to do with your clutter, you will need to ask yourself the following questions. Have I used or worn this item in the last year? Does this item have sentimental value? Does this item still work? Would I buy this again? Could someone else use it more than me?

Once you have answered these questions, it should become obvious to which sorting box each item belongs.

Pick An Area to Focus On

The best way to approach decluttering is one step at a time, room by room. Start in a room that you feel should be easy to decide on what to keep, for example, your bathroom or kitchen. You shouldn’t find many items that hold sentimental value, though some may have had a financial impact.

Break the area down into smaller sections so you do not become overwhelmed.  Start with a kitchen cabinet, a drawer or a pantry shelf and so on. Set your own schedule and timeline. Reward yourself when you complete a task.

Listen to Music

Play your favorite music, podcast, or audiobook while you’re decluttering. Sing or dance along and decluttering your home can become a fun experience.

Rent a Storage Unit To Give You Extra Space

After you have completed decluttering, you may find that there are things you want to keep but don’t have room for in your clutter free home. A simple solution is to rent a storage unit.  Storage units come in a variety of sizes and you can rent them on a short term or long term basis.

A storage unit is also an ideal place to store seasonal items or frequently used items you can't force yourself to get rid of.  You can also store the items you are undecided on and come back to review them later. A storage facility will keep your items safe and secure.
