Check Your Coolant

Having leaky hoses or low levels of coolant in your RV can cause some major engine damage.  Regularly check all hoses for any cracks or leaks and make sure your coolant is full.  Taking care of these problems immediately is very important.

Keep an Eye on Your RV Gauges

Always keep an eye on your RVs gauges, such as, engine temperature, oil pressure, charging, brake health indicators, etc.  Never ignore your gauges and just assume that nothing is wrong.

If problems are addressed immediately, in most cases, they can be an easy and quick fix.  Letting things go can cause huge problems down the road and ruin  your plans.

Some RV's come equipped with the most basic lights/gauges.  Consider changing these out for ones that have more detail.

Check Oil and Filters

One of the best ways to extend the life of your RV and keep it running at it's best, is to get regular oil changes.  Make sure to also change the air filter, as even a slightly clogged air filter can make the RV's engine have to work harder.

Watch Other Fluids

Pay attention to all of the fluids in your RV.  Always check your levels before taking your RV out.  If your transmission, brake, steering or windshield washer fluids are low, top them up immediately.

Tire Maintenance & Pressure

Inspect your RV's tires regularly.  Look for unusual wear and cracking.  Check to make sure that all tires are at the correct air pressure.

When parking your RV for an extended period of time, use blocks on the tires and make sure the RV is level.  This will prevent any premature wear an flat spots.

Pick up some tire covers or shields to put over your tires to protect them from UV rays.

Maintaining the Exterior

Your RV's exterior takes a beating from constantly being exposed to dirt, dust, UV rays and even weather.  These can cause damage, such as chips, faded paint and even deterioration of seals and tires.  By regularly cleaning the exterior of your RV, you can protect your RV from these damages for a longer period of time.

Regularly check all of the seals on the exterior of your RV for wear and cracking.  Fix or replace any that are deteriorated immediately to prevent any damage or leaks.

Properly Store your RV When Not In Use

Most RV parking storage sites, store your RV outside.  Here is a checklist of tasks to perform when storing your RV with Riel Park RV & Mini Storage:

  • Put  your RV supports down to take as much weight off of the tires as possible.  This will extend the life of your tires and help prevent them from forming flat spots.

  • Always do an oil change and add fuel stabilizer to the gas tank to prevent condensation and corrosion.

  • Remove your RV battery and keep it in a dry place and off of a concrete floor.  For more information on other winterization tips you can review our guide on how to winterize your RV for storage or mistakes to avoid when storing your RV.

  • During summer months, try to run the engine to operating temperature once a month.
