If you live and travel in Alberta, chances are you use RV storage in the winter. There are, however, many campgrounds that are open all season in Alberta. Since our climate conditions can be harsh during the winter months, many of us park our RV, fifth wheel, camper or travel trailer for the winter. As spring approaches it's time to think about getting your recreational vehicle ready for it's first trip of the season. If you store your RV for the winter, there are various recommended vehicle checks to be done before taking it on the road. Here are some helpful tips for taking your RV out of storage:
You should have removed your RV battery when you stored your RV for the winter. The battery will now have to be reinstalled in your RV. The condition of the battery will be dependent on how well you cared for it during the winter. Check for corrosion on connectors and clean if needed. Check and top up fluid levels. Make sure the battery is fully charged before placing it back in the RV.
Inspect the tire walls and tread, don't forget to check the spare tire. Check tire pressure and re-inflate if under recommended levels. If they are showing wear, make an appointment to get them replaced and mounted. If you have stored your RV at a storage facility, it's a good idea to bring an air compressor along when picking up your RV. If your tires are low you will be prepared.
Check fluid levels in the RV. Replace the oil and coolant.
The water system of your RV will need to be dewinterized if your RV has been in storage. If you used RV antifreeze, you will need to run fresh water thru all the lines. Flush out the water lines with bleach and rinse the lines until no bleach odour remains. Fill reservoir with fresh water.
Inspect all hoses for cracks, blockages and leaks, replacing as needed.
Inspect and clean or replace filters.
Wash exterior with soapy water checking for leaks and sealant breakdowns. Climb onto the roof to inspect all vent covers and seams.
Give the interior a good spring cleaning. While you are giving the interior a good clean, open up all the cupboards and inspect for any signs of rodent or water damage. Look for any issues that might have developed while storing your RV.
Turn on the fridge and electrical to check if working properly.
Check and fill propane tanks. Turn on the appliances to ensure they are working as expected.
Check all fire and CO detectors and update if needed.
Go thru and restock your recreational vehicle, fifth wheel, camper or travel trailer with all your basic necessities.
Gas up your RV and away you go.
