Storage Tips To Protect Your Belongings

When we store away our belongings, we expect them to be safe and damage free until the next time they are needed.  There are some items that are more susceptible to damage than others.

Check out these helpful storage tips to help protect your belongings while stored in a St Albert storage unit:

KEEP ITEMS RAISED A COUPLE INCHES OFF THE GROUND

It is helpful to keep your items elevated off the ground.  One easy way to do this is by using open shelving or placing clean pallets on the ground.

STORE A MATTRESS THE RIGHT WAY AND EXTEND IT'S LIFE

A good mattress can be pricey, but can serve you well for several years.  It's important to protect this important purchase by purchasing a mattress cover, storing it flat and to never pile or stack objects on top of it.

PROPERLY COVER FURNITURE BEFORE USING SELF-STORAGE

Prep your furniture for storage so they will be in good condition later.

A few suggestions include:

  • Wiping off any dust or dirt

  • Vacuuming couches/chairs

  • Covering pieces with the right material - fragile items with bubble wrap, use covers for armoires, dressers, sofas, tables, and chairs.  Do not cover your items too tightly as you may compromise the furniture's breathability.  If they're too loose, you lose any protection the cover may offer.

At Riel Park RV & Self Storage we sell packing and moving supplies for all your storage or moving needs.  We sell mattress covers, furniture covers, plastic wrap, bubble wrap, cardboard boxes, packing paper and more.

PROPERLY STORE CLOTHING

Wash or launder before storing and store clothing in airtight plastic containers.

DO NOT STORE FOOD INSIDE YOUR STORAGE UNIT

This tip might seem obvious, however, if moving in a hurry, it might get overlooked.  Don't leave your entire pantry inside a storage unit expecting no rodent to notice.

Look for food where you might not have intended to leave it.  Vacuum or clean out furniture beneath the cushions.  Check kitchen storage containers, pots and pans for any crumbs or residual food on the surfaces, thoroughly clean your toaster.

There are other items that you should not store in a self storage unit such as hazardous items or firearms.

ITEMS THAT MAY ATTRACT INSECTS/RODENTS

  • Fresh or packaged foods (especially beans & rice)

  • BBQ's - if you are storing your barbeque, make sure you put the grills thru the dishwasher so they are thoroughly clean

  • Corkboard

  • Scented Candles

  • Plants, seeds, soil

  • Animal Feed/Birdseed

  • Fruit Boxes

  • Paper items that are not boxed properly (paper needs to be stored in boxes with all sides tightly taped shut)

  • Foam furniture, mattresses, pillows (stored foam needs the correct plastic cover and proper sealing)

USE PEST DETERRENTS

You can use conventional bug spray and set mouse traps along the inside walls and near the door.

Riel Park RV & Self Storage uses a monthly external pest control professional service, however, taking extra precautions helps protect your belongings.
